The Central Shenandoah EMS Council, in partnership with Rockbridge County Fire-EMS, is proud to announce an accredited Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification program this Fall in Buena Vista, VA.  The program is designed to train an individual to function independently in a medical emergency. This course provides the basic knowledge and skills needed to deliver Basic Life Support (BLS) care and is required to progress to more advanced levels of prehospital patient care. The course requires a minimum of 144 hours of classroom and skills instruction and 24 hours of Clinical/Field rotations for a total of 156 hours of training. Virginia certification requires successful completion of a standardized cognitive and psychomotor skills examination. This course is designed to train individuals to serve as a vital link in the chain of the health care team. This includes all skills necessary to provide emergency medical care as an attendant-in-charge with a basic life support ambulance service or other specialized rescue service.

Important Dates

The Traditional EMT Class at Rockbridge County meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM at the Rockbridge County Fire-EMS Administration Building in Buena Vista, VA. The class commences on Monday, August 27, 2018 with a mandatory First Night Orientation. The class will also meet on three Saturdays (9/15, 10/27, 12/1) from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.  Lab sessions related to concepts learned during class lessons are mandatory. Lab is a critical opportunity to develop practical-skill competency as a member and leader of a small team. The program concludes after the Winter holidays on Wednesday, January 16, 2019. Students will commence the National Registry and Virginia Department of Health EMT certification testing process by taking the NREMT psychomotor examination on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 6:00 PM at the Beverley Manor Middle School in Staunton, VA.


CPR certification required prior to orientation webinar.

  • Specific CPR requirements are listed in the application information packet. This program will conduct mandatory CPR training on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 from 5:30 PM – 10:00 PM at the Rockbridge County Fire-EMS Administration Building in Buena Vista, VA. Attendance is required by all students. See the Application Packet for exceptions.
  • Applicants that require CPR certification prior to class are advised to make every effort to be available for this class. In the event it is not possible to attend this class, CSEMS regularly offers AHA BLS CPR classes. You may browse upcoming classes here and register for one of those an alternative. Please read carefully… To apply for the EMT program, complete the application form below.  Following submission of the registration form, you will be contacted by a faculty member who will provide you with additional information on the program, answer any questions you may have, and provide an invoice for the program tuition. Your registration for the program will not be complete and confirmed until the tuition is paid in full. 


  • Affiliated Tuition: $500 (Affiliated Tuition – See the Information Packet for eligibility)
  • Non-Affiliated Tuition: $800 (Non-Affiliated Tuition – All invoices initially reflect this rate. Information about requesting the affiliated tuition rate will be provided after your online registration is received).






You are registering for the Traditional Emergency Medical Technician program held at the Rockbridge County Fire-EMS Administration Building in Buena Vista, VA.
