Continuing Education

All Virginia EMS providers are required to earn a specific number of continuing education (CE) credits during their certification period.  The requirements vary by certification level–see the CE worksheets below for more information.

Providers are advised to not wait until the last minute to get their CE hours.

All CE hours must be in the Office of EMS before you certification expires. For example, if you expire on the 31st of the month and attend a CE class to get the last hours you need on the 29th of the month, the CE card will not arrive in Richmond before 5:00 pm on the 31st.  In order to ensure it is received, you would  have to overnight the CE card to the Office or drive it to Richmond. If you do not have all your CE in the Office of EMS on or before 5:00 PM on the last business day of the month, you will be in reentry.

It is up to the provider to keep track of their CE hours. If you took a class that did not credit, contact the instructor that taught the course to have the situation rectified. Do not wait until the last minute to fix CE that did not credit two years ago.

The continuing education system can be a confusing–please feel free to call the Council for assistance.  Please make sure you contact us promptly when you have an issue with CE so that we have time to remedy the problem. Many providers will call the day before they expire, leaving little to no time to figure out the problem and fix it.
