Virginia’s Lifted Restrictions – What this means for EMS?

On Thursday, May 27, the CSEMS Protocol Workgroup met to discuss the current regional COVID-19 protocol. In the coming weeks, the regional COVID-19 protocol will be retired, and the latest guidance integrated into the new Regional EMS Protocol document. We are also developing a FAQ sheet to guide many areas of operations for EMS. It is important to note that the CDC has not changed recommendations for PPE in healthcare settings with the recent updates for vaccinated persons. You can find the latest guidelines for healthcare providers at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/infection-control-recommendations.html.

Critical points to remember, pending further guidance from CDC and VDH:

  1. Continue to wear masks on all patient encounters, regardless of provider vaccination status.
  2. While the governor has lifted restrictions and universal mask mandates associated with Emergency Order 72, this does not replace the new Permanent Standard from the Department of Labor and Industry www.doli.virginia.gov
  3. For suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients, continue to wear full PPE, including N95 respirator, eye protection, gloves and gown.
  4. Continue decontaminating the drug box if directly exposed to a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patient or otherwise contaminated.

Please continue checking our website over the next few weeks as we update guidance. Thank you for all you do!
